Things To Do

  • Hiking

Madeira hosts some of the most epic hikes in the world—-like the famous Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo—-as well as hikes along historic levadas and stunning waterfalls.

If hiking interests you, we recommend waterproof hiking boots and waterproof layers as the higher elevations are often chilly and can be rainy.

We recommend using the app AllTrails to check on conditions and difficulty levels.

  • Culture and Cuisine

Madeira hosts some incredible culture and cuisine. We recommend barhopping to try the local Poncha, venturing with its bold sea food—-don’t sleep on the grilled scabbardfish with banana & passion fruit—-succulent madeiran sauce, and more.

We recommend booking a food tour, like WithLocals, for an authentic experience.

Madeiran also has a rich and complex history with forts, castles, historic forests, and so much more.

You can also visit the CR7 Museum (siuuu)

  • Water excursions and beaches

Madeira (and it’s neighboring island) is home to some incredible beaches, including the stunning black sand beach of Seixal. (check out this nearby coffee shop with incredible views).

The water is supposedly very warm in October, as well.

It is also famous for dolphin watching, boat tours, surfing and scuba diving.

We also recommend visiting the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools, and the other natural pools around the island.

  • Out on the Town

Downtown Funchal has many incredible shops, markets, restaurants and bars. You can catch some live music, sip beer by the ocean, or hit up the Casino.

Madeira is home to some incredible wineries, and October marks the last arm of the island’s harvest season! There are plenty of wineries to tour and Quintas and vineyards to visit around the island.
